We are a community arts charity with inclusivity at our core. For over 50 years, we've been dedicated to improving the life chances of those with support needs, disabilities, or in vulnerable circumstances through the transformative power of the arts.
Our reputation is built on strong partnerships and a commitment to those facing challenges and exclusion, including individuals with learning and physical needs, mental health issues, and homelessness, as well as families, Young Carers, and the unemployed. We also work across educational and community settings, making a meaningful impact wherever it's needed most.
Our work is governed by our four aims:
01
To become the organisation of first choice for inclusive participatory arts in Milton Keynes
We aim to be the “go-to” organisation in MK for the participatory arts, with specialisms in the sphere of Arts and Disability; communities under-represented in decision-making and the cultural mainstream; and people facing social or economic disadvantage.
02
To develop the quality, range and ambition of participatory arts practice in Milton Keynes
-
We develop innovative commissions and projects exploring new ways of delivering our services.
-
We support practitioner development and training especially with those who face challenge and/or are underrepresented in the Creative and Cultural sector.
03
To demonstrate the value of participatory arts
We do this by:
-
Delivering projects that deliver transformative experiences for individuals in terms of their personal development, confidence, skills and motivations
-
Delivering projects that create meaningful creative opportunities for communities and artists to come together and learn from each other
-
Taking a strategic role in working alongside key partners towards key Corporate and Cultural aspirations for Milton Keynes and beyond.
04
To run a credible and sustainable organisation to highest standards artistically, financially, ethically, environmentally.
-
We are run by an active Board and supported by independent professional finance services
-
We helped to shape and support the Arts and Heritage Alliance commitment to cultural inclusion and diversity. Read the manifesto here.
-
We are proud of our Artist Led past and still seek to recruit the highest calibre of creative, curious practitioners.
Our Team
Our lean, flexible organisational model is anchored by a dedicated part-time freelance team, supported by committed Trustees, regular volunteers, and freelancers. This structure allows us to scale efficiently, bringing in creative producers, artists, and partners as needed. By prioritising adaptability, we ensure a greater portion of our funding goes directly into projects and participant experiences, while maintaining strategic oversight to shape and enrich local culture.
Director
Diana Hatton
I have been Director since 2016 and am keenly aware of the legacy of joy and purpose built by the folk who have gone before and whose skills and commitment have built such fondness and respect for the organisation.
I love how down to earth, refreshing, truly inclusive and welcoming Inter-Action MK has and will always be. It is an absolute privilege to work here.
Office and Volunteer Manager
Margaret Rogers
I have worked for Inter-Action for almost 40 years. I came as the house keeper (1986) and now I am the Office and Volunteer Manager (present).
It is a lovely place to work and my 3 children grew up, joining in workshops and projects at Inter-Action and now their children come to projects and events. I have seen a lot of changes and have met a lot of interesting people.
Finance and Accounts Oversight
Kevin Smith
I am an accountant who works in the not-for profit sector. I have worked for Inter-Action MK for 10 years helping Diana and Maggie to manage the organisation's finances. As well as preparing the accounts, myself and my wife also volunteer at the Groovy Gecko club night every month.
Volunteers
With 25 regular volunteers and many more joining for projects and events, volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. Their dedication and passion drive our mission, extend our impact, and help us achieve the otherwise unattainable.
Each volunteer's unique skills and energy strengthen our community and fuel our success. Simply put, our work wouldn't be possible without them.
Trustees
Our Trustees are invaluable to our organisation, providing essential support and governance that guides our strategic direction. Their expertise, drawn from diverse professional backgrounds, enriches our decision-making processes and ensures that we operate with integrity, accountability, and vision.
Chair
Steve Howard
I took up the role of Chair in 2017. My whole career has been in finance and for the past 30 years, Private Banking and wealth management. However, I seek to bring to Inter-Action far more than support with managing finances. I have a passion for the arts and for charitable work and I can combine the two within my role here. Now is both an exciting and challenging time for the vital and vibrant third sector, and I relish working with Diana, her team, our partners and volunteers, and my fellow trustees.
Trustee
Tariq Raj
I found my passion for the Charity Sector after studying Law and gaining experience through volunteering in Pakistan and England since 2008. I supported health, disaster relief and technology based projects and have been part of several pioneering programmes focusing on community outreach. In my current role, I am Executive Director at CareTech Foundation, the leading independent grant-making charity in the UK social care sector, managing a portfolio of national and international partnerships that lead in areas of innovation, upskilling and employability. I have worked on community-focused events in Milton Keynes, as a part of Art in the Park, African Diaspora Day and Great Get-Together Iftar. I am a strong believer in celebrating unity and diversity through joint activity. I am immensely passionate about the work of Inter-Action MK. Our message of unity and acceptance resonates greatly with me, and I believe that Inter-Action MK proudly represents everyone looking to overcome the challenges they face with the support they need to grow.
Treasurer
Mike Barry
I have been treasurer since 2018 and a trustee for many years. However, my association with Inter-Action goes back to the very early days of the mid seventies when it was first founded and I was connected to a local Cable Community Radio Station. I have seen the many changes that Inter-Action has gone through and I admire the Staff and volunteers who have worked so hard towards our survival. There are some exciting times ahead for the whole team. I know it is not going to be easy, but when we look back, as now we will be proud of what we’ve achieved.
